Service Description
A combined excavator and skid steer training program is designed to teach operators how to safely and efficiently operate both types of heavy equipment. The class is a blended, hands on certification course following Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and local regulatory standards. Purpose The goal of this combined training is to prepare participants to: • Understand the principles of operation, controls, and functions of both excavators and skid steers. • Apply safe operating practices in different worksite conditions. • Perform inspections, maintenance checks, and safe start up/shutdown procedures. • Gain qualification or certification verifying competency in both machines. Program Structure 1. Classroom Instruction (Theory Component) -2 hours, this portion covers: • Safety regulations and responsibilities under OSHA/CSA/ANSI standards. • Equipment components, control layouts, and maintenance basics. • Understanding of load capacities, stability, and tipping hazards. • Site awareness, communication, and hazard identification. • Proper personal protective equipment (PPE). • Review of pre start inspections, transport, and parking. 2. Hands On (Practical Component) -6 hours, allowing each participant to operate both machines under supervision. Excavator Training Topics • Identifying machine parts and controls. • Performing pre use inspection (fluids, tracks, hydraulics, attachments). • Safe mounting/dismounting procedures and seat belt use. • Basic operating skills: swinging, digging, trenching, backfilling. • Working around utilities and ground hazards. • Safe loading onto trailers and site maneuvering. Skid Steer Training Topics • Control functions and direction controls. • Loading, lifting, carrying, and dumping materials. • Use of attachments (bucket, forks, augers). • Center of gravity and stability awareness on slopes. • Ground disturbance prevention and safe travel techniques. • Parking, securing, and maintenance review. Performance Evaluation Participants complete: • A written test demonstrating knowledge of safety rules and operational theory. • A practical evaluation where they show competency in: o Performing equipment inspections o Demonstrating proper control use o Performing typical job tasks safely and efficiently Performance Evaluation Participants complete: • A written test demonstrating knowledge of safety A passing score on both portions earns an operator card, valid for employer recordkeeping and compliance.
